Solar street lighting systems have made remarkable strides over the past three decades. Since our founder first introduced solar lighting to the world, SEPCO has been dedicated to creating reliable, long-lasting systems. We adopt new technologies only after they've proven to perform well over time, ensuring every system we produce can operate reliably for 20+ years with proper maintenance.
However, as solar lighting has gained popularity, the market has become saturated with many subpar systems, specifically with all-in-one solar lighting systems. While these may seem cost-effective at first glance since their price point is so low, they often fail to meet critical standards. Many lack sufficient solar panel capacity, battery storage, and proper light output, resulting in systems that cannot operate effectively all night. As with most investments, you get what you pay for.
Recently, we came across an ad for an all-in-one solar lighting solution offering AC backup power. While this might sound innovative, it raises an important question: isn't the whole point of solar lighting to reduce reliance on grid power, save on costs, or provide lighting in areas where grid power is unavailable or prohibitively expensive?
Adding AC backup negates the primary benefits of solar lighting installations. These systems would require trenching grid power to the site—one of the most expensive parts of traditional lighting installation. In many cases, solar lighting systems are used in remote or high-cost areas where trenching is impractical or prohibitively expensive. By reintroducing grid power, you eliminate the cost savings and environmental advantages that solar lighting is designed to deliver.
That's not to say backup solutions are inherently bad. In high-security or mission-critical applications, having a reliable secondary power source can be beneficial. However, this can be achieved without compromising the principles of grid free solar lighting. At SEPCO, we design systems tailored to the specific needs of each project, focusing on durability, efficiency, and long-term reliability. Properly designed and maintained, a high-quality solar lighting system should operate seamlessly for decades, ensuring you're never left in the dark.
The longevity and effectiveness of a solar lighting system largely depend on its design and maintenance. For commercially designed systems, maintenance typically involves a simple battery replacement every 5-7 years (sometimes up to 10 years) and routine visual inspections. In contrast, cheaper all-in-one systems often require yearly maintenance or replacement, with many failing after just two years.
This creates not only financial inefficiencies but also significant environmental waste. Unlike quality systems designed for a 20+ year lifespan, low-cost alternatives contribute to the waste of critical resources like silicon (used in solar cells), aluminum and steel (used for framing and brackets) and materials such as cobalt, lithium, manganese (essential for lithium batteries). By investing in durable, sustainable systems, you save money over time and reduce environmental impact.
Replacement parts and product support are almost nonexistent with many low-cost all-in-one solar lighting systems. Unfortunately, many of the companies producing these systems have a short lifespan, closing down or changing ownership, which makes getting assistance nearly impossible. This leaves customers stuck with a system that cannot be repaired or upgraded, ultimately forcing them to replace the entire system prematurely.
At SEPCO, we take a different approach. We provide ongoing support and replacement parts for our systems throughout their entire lifespan, ensuring you’re never left stranded. Even as technology evolves, our systems are designed to be upgraded without requiring a full replacement. This forward-thinking approach not only saves money but also supports a more sustainable and efficient use of resources.
